We've had a run of 90 degree days that have announced that summer is imminent. Above, we are canoeing, and can you see the great blue heron on the shore to the right of me? The water in Lake Washington is still cold (50's), but that didn't deter the kids from swimming.
Here are two living "bumps on a log" we found while canoeing. We saw dozens of turtles, herons, and other birds. We saw some beaver dens, but no beavers out swimming that day. A beautiful water lily in flower!
This office building would never be allowed to be built today, in this wetland area. But wouldn't you like to work there, and be able to go canoeing on your lunch break?
Over the weekend we went to a "natural living" festival, and the kids enjoyed making "veggie people" with toothpicks and vegetables.
Over at school the girls are having fun enjoying the last days before summer. There's some festival or celebration or party happening nearly every day now.
A is getting ready to "bridge" from Brownie to Junior in Girl Scouts. She has just one more meeting to wear her brown vest and beanie, and I admit I feel a little nostalgic about it. She's growing up so fast.
Part of A's 3rd grade curriculum is water safety, so every Friday her class goes to the city pool and practices floating, shore rescues, cold water survival skills, as well as general swimming. Above, A is clutching her pants as a float. The kids had to jump in the water fully clothed (with swimsuit underneath) and then quickly remove their pants, knot them, fill them with air, and then use them as a float. It's really fascinating to watch the kids go through the drills, and it's even more incredible to think that this might one day save their lives. We live in an area of many lakes and cold rivers, so the danger of falling in is real.
Our days are full, so we're grateful the sun is with us longer. More photos to come. Right now I must get back to the garden before it gets too hot. The weeds grow 3 times as fast as the veggies, so there's much to be done.
